In the boys' bedroom, Vasya wakes up, nicknamed Golovan. After listening to the rain and watching the mysterious night figures, he approaches a candle in a basin, around which night meetings of 2 brothers (Vasya and Mark) and 2 sisters (Masha and Shura) are traditionally held. At first, the nanny forbade meeting in the middle of the night, but soon the parties reached a mutual consensus. Soon Mark-Mordic wakes up. Vasya tells the whole honest company stories from the life of their family, including from the period when “they were not there yet,” but these stories are not always believed. This night, replenishment is expected in the family, and the lads discuss where the baby will come from. The version of the Jew Moshka seems to the most convincing children: angels bring children. Soon the girls and the nanny woke up. The nanny runs away, and then the children go to the room near the parent’s bedroom, where Uncle Henry is already sitting (his wife Katya died at birth a couple of years ago) and his brother, the young doctor Mikhail, who considers himself too old to pay attention to children.
The coachman Khvedko appears; he pushes Mark into the illuminated part of the room so that he finds out whether to harness the horses. Children are interested - so where do the children come from? - but after the usual "adult" versions expressed by Mikhail (found under a burdock, lowered on a gold thread), they themselves spoke about the angels. Michael criticizes them with might and main - because "the truth is higher than personal feelings!", But Henry supports the kids ("they feel the secret and try to clothe it in images"). After looking at the newborn sister and chatting with Khvedka on the porch, the children go to sleep, having received a couple of slaps from the nanny.
